Wright turns health care nightmare into action for Right Care Action Week

Susan Wright, PhD, from Marin County, CA, understands how important it is for health professionals to listen to patients, because she nearly died when doctors ignored her health concerns. Through her own infuriating experience as a patient, Wright discovered disturbing systemic problems in managed care, and recognized a need for patient advocacy and self-care. For Right Care Action Week, she is encouraging patients to share their stories in a safe space and to join the advocacy effort.

Right Care Action Week activities to focus on ‘listening’ to enrich health care

September 21, 2016 (Boston, MA) – Physicians, nurses and other clinicians have known for generations that listening is the bedrock of good health care. But these days, finding time to listen fully to a patient’s history and concerns has become nearly impossible, a trend that’s more than just frustrating. It’s dangerous. That’s why the Lown Institute has teamed up with more than a thousand clinicians, as well as members of the public, to promote listening during the second annual national Right Care Action Week, October 16-22.

Right Care Action Week activity probes what really worries patients

Last year emergency medicine residents Maia Dorsett and Alicia Oberle from Barnes Jewish Hospital and Medical Center chose something that hadn’t been tried before for their Right Care Action Week activity. They wanted to know what their patients’ greatest worries were. Along with other colleagues, they handed out index cards to patients in the ER asking them to write down their ‘biggest worry.’
